Our green gold

“Gunu Gowtu”

Some 98 percent of Suriname is covered with jungle and is part of the largest tropical rainforest on earth: the Amazon.
Suriname is one of the greenest countries in the world.
In practice, however, much of the forest is disappearing due to human activity, especially for commercial purposes.
About half of the population lives in the coastal area, causing the “greenery” to disappear from the city.
We also have our internationally highly regarded Mangrove Belt along our coast.
Mangrove absorbs significantly more carbon dioxide than tropical forest.
Mangrove is also now known to help against coastal erosion, provides protection from storms and is a crucial part of the solution to climate change worldwide.
For us, our forest is our gunu gowtu – our green gold – and has great value, not only for Suriname but for the entire world.
We must cherish our green gold!
